Winter Quarter Introduction

I’m Tim Kuhn. I’m a new resident of Washington, D.C., having lived in MD my whole life before the move two years ago. I earned my Bachelors in Communication Arts and Sociology from Hood College. Following my undergraduate graduation, I worked as a magazine editor, social worker for people with disabilities, a corporate scheduler at the Discovery Channel, and as a technical writer and configuration management specialist at NASA.

I started my career transition into GIS in 2016, when I enrolled in the GIS certificate program at Montgomery College. I started at UMD in Jan 2019 as a part-time student, and I plan on working full time as I make my way toward graduation from UMD. I’m currently a consultant for New Light Technologies, where I work a majority of each week at FEMA making logistics maps for disaster response exercises. I also oversee all of New Light Tech’s marketing and web presence.

I’ve started producing webmaps on AGOL this year at work. They’re very simple maps — just plain cartography with no analysis being done. I am interested in learning more about what Web GIS is capable of and developing a portfolio of work (something I still have yet to do in my relatively new career in GIS). I’ve taken GEOG 646 and GEOG 656, so I feel confident I can hold me own with the web programming aspects of the course.

I try to hold weekly homework working groups for anyone that may be interested. I’ll publish a notice on the discussion board, so keep your eyes peeled!
