Taxicab Confessions

I got a bit caught up in the news reports this weekend and my penchant to jump to the doomsday scenario reared it’s head.

I took a taxi cab to my hotel from SJU airport, and when I told the driver why I was here, she bristled at hearing my agency’s name.

“We’re still roiling from Maria, so why don’t you focus on that instead?”

I didn’t know what to say, but I didn’t want to gaslight her. So I just said, “I hear you, and that’s fair. I don’t know what to say, though, because I’m new here.”

She appreciated that, I think, and we changed the topic to the protests. I was surprised that she didn’t agree with the demonstrations because of the resulting property damage, but I think she appreciated my thought that maybe the opportunity to be angry in public was necessary in a way, even if controversial.
