Hatred is not a complicated concept. It’s often couched in gradients, made invisible by the speakers’ “ignorant but good intentions.” That somehow their not meaning to dehumanize you after they’ve dehumanized you should somehow be considered into the calculus of acceptability. That that alone should absolve them of culpability.
I wish more people among my best friends and family would’ve called me a faggot to my face. I might not have wasted the entirety of my twenties trying to appease every single one of them.
Hate speak is scary, but it’s a clarity telling you which side of a border you’re on.
To be clear is to be kind. To be unclear is to be unkind.
Because power can be subverted once it gives itself away.
When it makes itself clear.
When it announces itself in public.
